Novelty Item: This item is a humorous physical representation for the cause of a computer system fault. The term comes from a moth that became trapped in the relay contracts of an early (1947) computer system called the Harvard Mark II being developed for the U.S. Navy. This caused the system to fail. Operators discovered the moth, removed it, and taped it to the logbook with the notation: "First actual case of bug being found," coining the term "debug". U.S. Navy Commodore Grace Hopper, one of those programmers, recounted the incident some years later which led to the terms “bug” and “debugging” as related to computer systems. Several varieties are offered here as not all computer system faults are caused by exactly the same thing.
